On Saturday, February 18th, 2012 from 4pm-11pm Old Town La Puente (Along 1st/Main Street) will host Un Poquito Mas Arte the first of a quarterly Art Walk series uniting local artists, educators, businesses, and community members as they proudly showcase artworks at various establishments across Old Town La Puente. The La Puente Branch of the LA County Library will kick off this event with a Poetry Reading and Open Mic at 4pm, along with 3 hosted galleries, a record hop, and participation by other local business. This event is supported and sponsored by the Nuvein Foundation for Literature and the Arts.

Cartoonists will include Michael Aushenker ("Cartoon Flophouse") and Rafael Navarro ("Sonambulo"), the co-creators of "Gumby's Gang Starring Pokey", Carlos Saldana ("Burrito"), Will Caulfield ("Bat-Bat"), Jose Cabrera ("Crying Macho Man"), "Ghettomation" animator Jim Lujan, Grasiela Rodriguez ("Lunatic Fringe"), and the Agimat team (the comic strip "Shadow Candy," the video game "Sugar Rush").

For the more mature and twisted crowd, Richard Carradine and Lisa Strouss, co-founders of GHOULA (Ghost Hunters of Urban Los Angeles), will sign copies of GHOULA Comix #1, which features work by many of the cartoonists in attendance.

I spent the evening at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness yesterday in Laguna Beach. They are next to the beach and the temple has really wonderful art, statues and paintings inside. After the services, they served the best vegetarian meal ever! I had a wonderful time here and it was very inspiring.

Cinco de Mayo always brings many tasty treats and ethnic delights to the SanFrancisco Bay Area. In celebration of the season, the Cartoon Art Museum presents the First Annual Latino Comics Expo on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8, 2011.

The Latino Comics Expo is an event celebrating the influence of Latino culture on the comic book arts. The event founders are longtime Bay Area arts patron Ricardo Padilla and cartoonist/publisher Javier Hernandez.

Attending creators include Michael Aushenker, EL GATO, CRIME MANGLER; Hector Cantu, writer of the BALDO newspaper strip; Jose Cabrera, CRYING MACHO MAN; Jaime Crespo, TORTILLA; Javier Hernandez, EL MUERTO; Rafael Navarro, SONAMBULO; Anthony Opreza, AMIGOMAN; Grasiela Rodriguez, LUNATIC FRINGE; Carlos Saldaña, BURRITO; and others to be announced. Museum patrons will have the opportunity to meet these artists, purchase books, get original sketches and participate in workshops and special presentations throughout the weekend.

Highlighting the Expo will be a rare convention appearance by Mario Hernandez, who launched the legendary LOVE AND ROCKETS comic book series back in 1982 , along with his brothers Jaime and Gilbert. Mario will be conducting a reading and signing. An exhibition celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of LOVE AND ROCKETS is scheduled to launch at the Cartoon Art Museum in 2012.

“We’re honored that Ricardo and Javier approached us to host this historic event,” said Cartoon Art Museum Curator Andrew Farago. “They’re bringing a lot of knowledge and a lot of enthusiasm to the Expo, and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented group of creators. I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that Ricardo’s already started planning for the Second Annual Latino Comics Expo.”

About the Cartoon Art Museum

Founded in 1984, the Cartoon Art Museum is the only museum in the western Unite States dedicated to cartoons and comics. The Museum was started by a group of cartoonists and collectors who wanted to share their appreciation of this unique art form with the rest of the world. “WE DON’T NEED NO STINKIN’ BADGES” - INDIE ANIMATORS TAKE HOLLYWOOD’S REINS

[WHITTIER, CA] Twice Oscar-nominated, indie animator Bill Plympton will headline a FREE showcase of rebel animators with his Academy Award short-listed film “The Cow Who Wanted to be a Hamburger.” On January 22, 2011 at ‘Geeks’ a comic shop in Whittier, CA will host the event sponsored by the Nuvein Foundation.

Plympton, also on this year’s Oscar short-list for his feature “Idiots and Angels” had little industry support when he hung up his spurs as syndicated cartoonist, declined to be roped in by Hollywood animation mills, and forged new trails after producing the Oscar nominated short “Your Face” in 1987. Now he shares the trails he blazed with "outlaw" animators who have looked to him for inspiration.

Of the show’s coordinator, Plympton states “I love [Jim Lujan’s] shorts. Great soundtrack and character design and wicked humor.” Lujan himself describes the show as “A band of rebel animators who ride into town armed with a ‘do it yourself’ spirit.”

Geeks comic shop, 6747 Greenleaf Ave. in Whittier, will host the event. The Nuvein Foundation of San Gabriel Valley will sponsor. The Nuvein Foundation's mission is to raise scholarship funds for students and professionals in the arts, and showcases art via community performances and educational programs.

Shorts will range from the cut-out style of Grasiela Rodriguez to the mature Saturday-morning-satire of the Steven Sievers/David Kolodny-Nagy team to Ken Mora’s computer-animated spoof of ‘Dirty Harry‘ films, along with industry mavericks like Dominic Polcino (director of The Simpsons and Family Guy), Disney veteran Raul Aguirre Jr. who will create a short especially for this show, and object-animator PES, plus surprise guests.

A pre-show mixer, with refreshments, is open to the public at 7:00 pm with screenings to start promptly at 7:30. This show's content is recommended for teens and adults.

This is the first of a series of "Art for Justice" works that I am making for a group show next spring. The group show is inspired by Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who is a widow facing the death penalty for alleged adultery, and is said to have been lashed 99 times after what was said to be a picture of her without a headscarf appeared in a newspaper.. The show will be a sort of protest against the "Crimes Against Humanity". This painting is titled "Miss October" it depicts the playmate Clair Sinclair in a burqua showing off her playboy jewelry. This painting is inspired 100% by the wonderful works of Makan Emadi's Islamic Erotica which can be viewed here: http://makangallery.com/Gallery.htm

So I made a blog today! Don't really know if I will be able to keep it up, but we'll see! My friend Hortencia had a "4d and the City" (Sex and the City) themed birthday party and she hand painted the cutest martini glass souvenirs and we also got to use them for our cocktails!!!
